Understanding BasketballBasketball Terms:
Offense-team with ball
Defense-team without ball
Foul-doing something against the rules(travel, double dribble, hit someone)
Travel-walking without dribbling ball
Double dribble-dribbling, hold the ball, then dribble again
Box out-"put your butt in their gut" after shot goes up Rebound-getting missed shot
Block-throwing away opponents shot, hitting it away
Assist-passing ball to teammate, they make a basket
3point-shot beyond 3point line
Free throw-shot from free throw line
Field goal-shot from anywhere
Technical-hard foul such as pushing
Technical-intentional hard foulSteal-taking the ball away from opponent
Lay up-shot from block
Lane-in between sides on free throw line from the free throw line to basket
Rules:
No traveling
No double dribbling
No standing in the lane for 3 seconds while on offense
No hitting, kicking, tripping, etc
No more than 5 people per team on the court at once
No being unsportsmanlike
No blocking ball after it's beginning to go down, goaltending
No arguing with ref to extentHow to play:
Depending on what level you're playing on, you play for so many minutes a quarter.
There are 4 quarters in a game.
If someone gets 5-6 fouls, depending what level, you are fouled out and get taken out of the game. If you get two flagrant or technicals, you can't play that game or nextYou play until all 4 quarters are up, unless you are tied, then you play for another 3-5 minutes, until one team wins.
When on offense, you try to get the ball into the basket and not let the defense take the ball
When on defense you are trying to take the ball or make the other team miss
