No matter how fastidious you are, it’s basically impossible to prevent the accumulation of dust in your house. It comes from your shoes, pets, clothes, furniture and even your body. However, there are ways to reduce dust levels in your house and remove it more effectively. Use these easy dust removal strategies to become a master dust buster!
Vacuum often and intelligently. Vacuuming once a week is a great way to remove dust from your rugs and floors, but it’s also important to use the right tool for the job. Upright vacuums with an agitator are best for carpets and rugs, while canister vacuums – which are more compact and capable of producing strong suction even with attachments – are more effective on wood, tile and other types of hard floors.
Wipe furniture and counters with a wet cloth. Feather dusters can be fun, but they generally wind up moving dust around rather than picking it up. Use a damp cloth instead, which will hold the dust much more effectively.
Change your furnace filters regularly. If you have a central heating and cooling system, all the air in your house passes through your furnace filter. Changing your furnace filter takes about five minutes, and is an easy way to reduce dust levels and keep your furnace healthy.
Take your shoes off when you enter your house. Not only will your shoes spread dirt throughout the house, they’ll also bring in germs and bacteria like E. coli. By leaving your shoes at the door, you can eliminate up to 70% of dirt and debris that would otherwise get tracked through your house.
Clean your closet once a week. Your closet is essentially a dust factory. The fabric of your clothing and towels are constantly shedding tiny fibers that accumulate on the floor and then get spread throughout your house. But, it’s easy to forget about your closet during your cleaning routine. Vacuum and clean your closet once a week to remove dust at its source.
Wash your bedding at least every two weeks. It’s not a very pleasant thought, but while you sleep your body sheds flakes of skin into the fabric of your sheets. This “skin dust” serves as food for dust mites and also gets spread throughout your house. To remove dust and kill dust mites, wash your bedding in hot water (at least 130 degrees F) at least every two weeks.
Beat your rugs three or four times a year. Vacuuming goes a long way towards keeping the dust off your rugs, but there’s nothing like a good old fashioned rug-beating to really ditch the dust. Take your rugs outside and hang them on a clothesline, fence or other sturdy object. Use a stick, broom or even a tennis racket to give your rug a thorough whopping. You’ll be surprised by how much dust your vacuum leaves behind.
