  • We started with some logs from the cottage woodpile. We loved the aged look of these particular logs. You can experiment with different types of logs, depending on what you have available. If you are sawing & drilling these yourself, you might want to choose a soft wood like pine.

  • Our logs were between 2½ to 4" wide, & we cut them at random lengths, from 3½ to 10" long. You can sand them afterwards or go with the simple rustic look. In order to fit a typical votive candle, drill a hole using a 1.5" wood boring bit. Mark the bit with tape at the ¾" mark so that you know how deep to drill. Make sure to wear safety glasses & clamp the logs down to keep them steady. If you are using a hand drill, hold it firmly.

  • Time to paint. The brands of liquid metallic gold paint were a little pricey, so we decided to approximate the look with inexpensive gold spraypaint. We used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Brilliant Metallic paint in Gold, which was less than $5.

Start by taping off an uneven line with masking tape. Paint below the line with primer. You can skip this step, but the gold paint sank into the wood leaving a dull finish. To get a shiny gold look, you really need to start with a primer.

  • After the primer has dried, mask off the top section with newspaper. Apply the spray paint in several light coats until you have the desired look. The more coats you apply, the shinier the metallic finish. We used three coats.

Let the paint dry & remove tape. You're done! Our batch of 10 gave us many options for display. They look great in sets of 2, or groups of 3 or 5. For a dramatic look, group them all together on a mantle, sideboard, or your dining room table. The sky’s the limit.

  • These would be just as cute on a birthday cake as they would as standalone decor!

SAFETY WARNING You’re managing hot candle wax, a hot surface, and paper molds. You’ll eventually burn your project. Make sure to use wax and wicks designed for candle making. Use caution around the hot wax by protecting your hands, eyes, surfaces, and anything else that could be injured or damaged. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • This one was down to 35 inches. You can customize the size to whatever you want + can even have the hardware store cut the wood for you if you don’t have a saw. Of course if you have scrap wood lying around {that isn’t treated} you could always use that for this project.

To make this, follow one of the other candle-making instructions. I just added this because I think it's a clever candle holder. it's very straight forward. It can pretty much be made the same as any other candle in this post.
