Pumps, wedges, and flats become a serious mess when they’re stacked and stored haphazardly, which can take a serious bite out of your closet real estate. Take control of your footwear by instituting a clear system and using some clever organizing tricks. You’ll go a long way towards tidying up
  • First, you need to figure out what’s staying in the closet, and what’s going into storage. To narrow things down, ask yourself these three questions:

How many pairs do you need to store? We’re not suggesting that you decimate your shoe collection, but you don’t need them all in the closet. Take a look at your closet and decide how many pairs of shoes it can realistically hold. If you don’t have enough space, narrow things down with the next question.

What shoes are most important? "Important" could be your favorite pairs or just the ones that see the most action.

  • Divide your shoes into two piles: "important" (for the closet) and "others" (to be stored elsewhere).

Are your shoes all-season? Do you really need access to your fur boots in the summer? If you’re not switching your shoes out seasonally, you’re only hurting yourself! We suggest separating your shoes by seasons and doing a switcharoo in the fall and spring.

  • Play the no-floor game. Once the shoes start hitting the floor, they tend to stay there. Challenge yourself to keep them off of the floor at all times. There are a ton of organization products on the market that will help, including door organizers, plastic bins and cloth vertical hanging organizers. When you take your shoes off, put them back in their allotted place.

  • Use the area underneath your shirts. If half of the closet is filled with long dresses, choose the other side for your shoes. Since shirts are shorter, there will be plenty of empty space for your footwear. You don’t want to sift through flowing fabrics every time you get dressed!

  • Make it all clear. Keep the closet organizers and under-the-bed storage solutions transparent. That way, you’ll be able to see your entire collection at once and won’t dig around searching for that perfect pair of blue pumps and mess up your organization system.

  • Organize your clothes. They may seem unrelated, but it really helps to think of your closet's functionality as a whole. Your shoe organization system will only last if the rest of your closet has a system, too! Otherwise, your shoes will cover your floor again in no time.

  • Move beyond the bedroom. If you want to organize beyond the closet, consider instituting a no shoe policy. Place a few shoe organizers by the front door for the “favorites” shoe pile. As soon as you walk in the door, put your shoes in their bin. When the seasons change, move the front-door shoes to your storage place and vice-versa.
