  • I get it. You’re picky about your laundry detergent. You’ve spent years playing the field - and no small amount of sniffing and snuggling - before finding your beloved brand. The thing is, your sun-and-stars detergent is probably costing you somewhere between $325 to $550 a year.

  • There’s a cheaper, just-as-lovely option: DIY detergent!
The recipe only requires three basic ingredients and costs about five cents per load. That means you’ll only need to spend about $25 per year on detergent. That amounts to about $300-$500 saved (Think of the possibilities).

  • What you’ll need:

These first 3 ingredients can usually be found in the detergent aisles of most grocery stores. I always can count on finding them at Walmart and they happen to be way cheaper there too.

  • Other things you'll need:
A cheese grater (I got this one at the dollar tree and it's by far the best I've ever used).
An airtight container. I use an old Oxyclean container.

  • 1. Finely Grate 2 Cups of FELS-NAPTHA
I don’t suggest using the same grater that rubs against your favorite cheese (soap and sharp cheddar don’t pair well). But an old or cheap cheese grater is perfect for this!

  • 2. Measure 1 Cup Borax + 1 Cup Washing Soda

3. Mix Well and Store
Put these three ingredients into the airtight container and shake until you think they are blended.

  • 4. Use 2 Tablespoons Per Load
This detergent is low on suds, which is perfect for high-efficiency machines Because of its low-suds count, you might be tempted to add more soap, but there’s no need! This is the best detergent I have ever used.
