  • What you will need:
Bar of soap- I used Zote, some use fels-naptha, I have heard of some using scented bar soap. (Dial, etc.)
    Borax
    Washing Soda
    Scent beads of crystals (optional)

    Large pan
    Cheese grater
    Bowl
Spoon with long handle (not plastic, wooden preferably to prevent boil over)
    5 gallon bucket with lid

  • Step 1: grate the entire bar of soap with cheese grater. Make sure it is thinly grated. This is the hardest you will work through the entire process.

  • Step 2: fill the pan halfway full of water and bring to a boil

  • Step 3: once water is boiling, stir in grated soap until it is entirely melted

  • Step 4: add 1 cup of borax SLOWLY. During this process, a reaction occurs that will cause the mixture to boil over. A wooden spoon helps in this step to prevent boil overs by placing the spoon across the pan. If you don't have a wooden spoon, no worries, just add the borax a little at a time. Once it's added, stir. The mixture will look like this:

  • Step 5: add 1 cup of Washing Soda. Stir it in well. This will eliminate the foamy look of the mixture. Remove from heat once mixed well. It will look like this:

  • Step 6: fill the 5 gallon bucket halfway with HOT water.

  • OPTIONAL STEP: add scent beads or crystals to 5 gallon bucket and stir until dissolved. It will look like this:

  • Step 7: add mixture from stove to 5 gallon bucket. Mix well.

  • Step 8: fill 5 gallon bucket the remainder of the way up with more water

  • Step 9: let bucket with mixture sit for 24 hours before using to allow the mixture to thicken.

  • Step 10: save money and enjoy your homemade detergent
