Look Younger With These 6 Hair Tricks
A good haircut and some strategic moves can make you look younger. Here’s how to achieve the look…
Anti-aging face creams and eye serums aren’t the only parts of your beauty routine that can turn back years. So can a good haircut. Read on for six hairstyles and tips that can help you look younger.
1. The Bob
“A bob looks great on every face shape, but when you take into account the client’s hair type and texture, as well as how the haircut is layered and styled, the style becomes more youthful,” says Indianapolis pro stylist Teddi Bickers.
A sassy angle can transform a bob into something playful and youthful. Short haircuts provide a lift and enhance your bone structure, ensuring a more youthful look.
Make your bob more edgy with a texture spray like Kenra Dry Texture Spray 6.
Face-framing layers soften facial features and reduce the appearance of fine lines. They also give hair lots of movement, which can subtract years from your look. For example, Jennifer Aniston’s iconic hairstyle has proven the “Anti-Aging Layer Theory” to be true.
Layers add youthfulness to a haircut because it breaks up the strong horizontal lines in the cut. It adds softness and movement, especially around the face,” Bickers says.
Long and side-swept bangs can help hide crow’s-feet around the eyes. Also, eyebrow-skimming bangs hide forehead wrinkles and play up eyes.
What are the best bangs for you?
“Whenever someone has a smaller forehead, I try to steer them away from any heavy bang,” Bickers says. “It will make their face look even smaller.
“A nice place to start is in between the cheekbone and jaw bone area,” she says. “[The bangs would] still be long enough to pull back off the face and complimentary to most face shapes.”
4. Soft Curls
milar to layers, the softness of curls can even out the appearance of lines or wrinkles. It also gives your hair a natural, effortless bounce and flawless movement.
“You can create waves with your beveled-edge flat iron by twisting it 180 degrees with the hair in between the plates and running it through to the ends. Always twist going away from the face; this gives you soft waves that open up off the face,” Bickers advises.
Warm highlights around the face make your skin glow and give the illusion of lift and youthfulness.
That’s because “highlights can soften the lines of our face as we age,” says Mindy Stegall, a stylist in Indianapolis.
“A dark color can wash us out and create a backdrop to showcase fine lines and wrinkles,” she says. “A combination of highs and lows helps diffuse gray hair as it comes in.”
That doesn’t work if your hair is dark because “it can accentuate every wrinkle,” she warns.
And “if your hair color is too light, it can wash out your skin tone,” Stegall says. “A good warm/caramel hue will brighten up your appearance.”
6. Shine Shine makes your hair look nourished and healthy, making you look younger.
Use a clarifying shampoo followed by a deep conditioner/shine treatment, Bickers suggests.
“Sometimes product can build up on the hair or hair can be affected by what’s in your water,” she says. “A clarifying shampoo will deeply cleanse and remove any buildup.”
