I do this actually quite frequently, and there's no sleep medication at all. Totally natural!
It's called pause breathing. Your brain does this when you're falling asleep so when done properly you can trick your brain into thinking that you're already falling asleep, which puts you right to sleep!
All you have to do is breathe normally for 15 seconds and exhale completely and hold your breathe for 2-3 seconds. After a few minutes you can feel yourself falling asleep. It is very important that you lay perfectly still!!!!! Any movement will disrupt it. So make sure you are nice and comfy when you start. When you get good at that, you can add in VERY SMALL twitches. This is a test to see if you are falling asleep. Do not react to them. Slightly twitch a finger, your toe. Anything small. Before you know it you'll be in dreamland!
