How To Clean and Keep Lettuce Crispy

  • To clean your lettuce first you need to remove the core (the round thing at the bottom of the lettuce). The quickest and best way is to smack the core against the inside wall of your sink (one of the sides facing you). Don't be afraid you might hurt the lettuce, you won't.

  • You can now pull the core of the head of lettuce out.

Cleaning your head of lettuce is easy. Just turn on the cool tap water turn the lettuce upside down put under tap right where the core was and around all sides of lettuce.

Turn upside down into a colander and let the lettuce drain 5 minutes.

  • I usually at this point pull off the outside leaves (they are usually limp) but you can keep them on, this is your call.

Put your head of lettuce in large enough container with sealable lid.

  • Take a regular size paper towel and place it on the lettuce in the container.

The paper towel will absorb water from lettuce.

But that's ok, because the wet paper towel is what is going to keep your head of lettuce really nice and crispy.l

  • Instead of putting your lettuce in in tacked, you can pull all of the leaves off and put them in the container with sealable lid, just as long as you put the paper towel on the top before sealing.

  • I was taught to wet the paper towel but then, very quickly, the paper towel was soaked, and it won't keep the lettuce as long.

This has kept my lettuce for as long as 7-10 days.
