How To Avoid A Poison Ivy Rash

  • Poison ivy rashes are caused by the skin's allergic reaction to the resin produced by the poison ivy. To avoid such a reaction, it's certainly best to avoid skin contact with the resin. Note that the resin can be transferred from the plant to clothing. Soap is not sufficient to breakdown the resin, so use detergent to wash clothing and skin that may have contacted the resin. The longer the resin is in contact with the skin, the worse the rash, so wash with detergent as soon as possible.

  • The rash may take 3-5 days to develop, followed by another 3-5 days of blistering and drying out, and then another 3-5 days of healing scars.

Use baby powder to reduce the itch and help absorb drainage.
