Do you really know your Tequila?

  • If you šŸ’— alcohol especially Tequila here's a few cool facts about it.
There's 2 main types of tequila & they split into 2 categories.
    1) 100% Blue Agave
    2) Tequila Mixto (mixed). Mixed has a minimim of 57% Blue Agave & 49% sugarcane. Additional products are allowed such as caramel color, oak extract and sugar based syrup.
READ the LABEL ON your BOTTLE to tell you which class it falls under.
" Tequila de Agave 100%" or
"Tequila 100% Purode Agave" are obviously 100% Blue Agave. Mixtos only say "Tequila".

  • THOSE categories are divided into 5 divisions.
One of them is Tequila Reposado & it has a golden hue & tastes of Agave & Wood flavors. Its "rested & aged" in wooden barrels from 2-11 mnths.
Popular wooden barrels are French Oak & American. Tequila can be stored in Whiskey, Bourbon or Cognac barrels to inherit those unique flavors.
āPatron Reposado is this kind of Tequila that's not as expensive as the others.

  • Another kind of tequila is Tequila Anejo which means Extra Aged. It has to sit atleast 1 yr to be considered Anejo. It darkens to an Amber tone & the flavor is smoother, richer & more complex.
"Don Pilar Anejo" is this type of Tequila.

  • Then there's Extra Anejo which is ultra-aged. This classification came about in 2006 & it has to age for 3+ yrs. This tequila is MUCH darker then others. It is SO RICH that it's actually hard to distinguish from other QUALITY spirits. Its also so rich that the distillers HAVE to dilute it with distilled water & can only hold a maximum 600 liter barrel of it at a time & not a drop more.
āCasadores is an Extra Anejo Tequila.

  • The 4th type is Tequila Silver -Plata
-Blanco -White. These are Blue Agave in it's purest form. Its usually un-aged & clear. Can be bottled right after distillation or put in stainless steel tanks up to 2 mnths which make it way smoother.
    āJose Cuervo ( A Mixto) &
āPatron Gran Patron Platinum Silver are examples of this.

  • The last class is the Gold -Joven -Oro Tequila. It's young & adulterated, typically a Mixto where the flavors were added before bottling it. Its LESS EXPENSIVE & used in restaurants & bars for mixed drinks. The only exceptions of "Gold" & "Joven" result from mixing Silver Reposado and/or Anejo while staying in the 100% Blue Agave class.
