  • Step One:
Take everything out. And I mean everything. All of it.

  • Step Two (for all you DIYers out there):
Make a list of DIYs that you want to do using your old clothes--or anybody's for that matter. It'll be like you're going shopping in your own closet like you would a fabric store! Keep this list in mind for later

  • Before you start purging, though, go through your stacks of clothes that should now be out of your closet, and pull out your favorites. If you hesitate for even a second, you don't love it (link from earlier).

"By examining the clothes you love in a vacuum--that is, without the rest of your clothes surrounding them and clamoring for attention-- you will see a pattern. Maybe you like striped shirts best. Or are comfortable in black clothing."

  • Step Three:
Make outfits with the pieces you love. Figure out how many different ensembles you can create, and if you find you need another piece to complete your look, then grab it.

Take photos of your outfits with your phone, so you always have a picture to remind you of your favorite outfits.

  • Step Four:

    Purge.

  • Using this list, you can easily find out which clothes you are in love with, and which are going in the scrap/Goodwill piles.

  • Step Five:
You're pretty much done. Hold on, though, don't put those clothes back in your closet yet! Flip all of your hangers around before putting the clothes back on them. Then, next time you wear that particular item, replace the hanger the right way. After a few months, when you think it might be time for a mini-purge, you can easily track down the clothes you don't wear.

  • Enjoy your beautiful closet!
