Bye, Bye, Boredom: 7 Productive Ways to Spend Your Free Time
Health & Fitness
We’ve all been there: it’s a Saturday mid-morning and you’re bored out of your mind. You need cheap, easy ideas for burning the next few hours. While Netflix is your usual go-to weekend activity, here are some things that you can do now and enjoy long after the work week begins.
1. Weave a Wall Hanging
Remember those cardboard mini-weavings you did in 3rd grade art class? Level up your craft game with some tutorials (like this one) and create something gorgeous for your home with things you probably already have lying around the house. Making with your hands will get your mind moving, in all the right ways.
2. Listen to a Podcast
If you aren't already in to podcasts, grab your phone and start browsing iTunes. You can find popular casts by category, so whatever you’re in to – business, fashion, or food – is available to download for free. Now, you’ll have plenty to keep you company while commuting or completing boring household tasks like washing dishes or cleaning bedrooms. Podcast Tip: If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t listened to Serial yet, now is the time!
3. Go Crazy with Color Coding
If your bookcase or wardrobe is looking haphazard, start color coding your collection. Create an ombre or colorblocked pattern. The mindless task will keep you busy and help you de-stress from a long week, all while creating a new and interesting space in your home. It’s the cheapest, and coolest, craft you could do.
4. Rearrange Small Furniture
Switch out bedroom lamps, rearrange side tables, or give your candles a new little nook in your home. This task will force you to get creative, and create a fresh looking home without spending a penny. Bonus? Move bigger furniture for a little exercise and team building with your roommate.
5. Purge Some Clutter Spots
Chances are, you have things lying around your house that are only taking up space. Grab a box or trash bag and start purging books you’ve read, mugs you never use, DVDs you didn’t like, magazines, and out-of-date or ill fitting clothes. You can donate your items, so at the end of the purge you’ll feel satisfaction from giving back and refreshed by all the clean, clear space.
6. Record a Cooking Show
Browse the cooking channel for a show – and recipe – you haven’t tried before. Hit record and know that it’ll be in your queue to watch later. It will save time and the stress of what’s-for-dinner decision making. Newbie Cook Suggestion: Try Nigella Kitchen! She keeps it simple.
7. Bust Out the Paint
Chances are, you have a little bit of paint left over from your last project. Don’t throw it away! Find something around your house that needs new life - from wooden spoons to planters or even a side table. It’s a quick project that you can do outside, so throw on some shades and sunscreen and get to painting!
