Avoid Pain When Your Braces Are Tightened
Health & Fitness
Getting your braces tightened is a daunting task. The first few hours may be very painful to nearly anyone, regardless if its your first time or your last time. Read on to find out how to minimize as much pain as possible, to ensure your experience with braces even better. 😁
Carry painkillers with you so that you have it when needed. Tylenol works well, but there are many brands of other painkillers.
Take the medicine one hour before entering the office. This way it will already be in your bloodstream when you have your appointment. Also, be sure to take the correct amount with at least one full 8 ounce glass of water.
Go into your appointment and try not to think about it too much.
Think about something else while they are tightening the braces, like something fun you'll be doing later. Close your eyes and relax. You can bring ear phones and listen to music while they do it. It will help you to wind down and make you stress free.
Tell the orthodontists if you feel something is poking you. This can cause sores and lead to infection. You might not want to speak up, but they will most likely be glad you told them. Sometimes a wire begins to poke a few hours after your appointment. If this happens, call your doctor and come back
Be very self-aware. If a wire is poking you, don't try to "tough it out." Tell the orthodontist and get it fixed; it may cause a bad sore and infection if not corrected. While they are tightening the braces, try not to move. This will make the pain worse.
Minor irritation can be remedied with dental wax or dental silicone (such as Ortho-Sil or Brace Relief).
Try not to hit your teeth on hard surfaces such as cups, forks, etc. As your teeth are very sensitive. Avoid biting down too hard.
Get a glass full of water with a straw. Place on bracket whilst drinking. This helps best at night or the day or two after your braces are tightened.
Get cold water and swish it around on your teeth when eating. It helps a lot.
