As an actor, things can get seriously expensive. You can't get a job if you don't have decent headshots, a load of experience, and a fantastic showreel.
But Showreels can cost an absolute fortune!! These prices are just the initial scenes alone...
If you actually want the showreel to look good and professional, there are additional costs for that. There's even extra costs if you want another actor in the scene!
Honestly, doing your showreel this way means you're looking at about £1000, and even then you can't guarantee that it will come out how you want, or that it will get you work.
So, the best way is to make your own.
There are loads of sites out there such as StarNow (my personal favourite) and Casting Call Pro, which all let you search through jobs and apply. A lot of these jobs are unpaid, but they'll provide you with the footage at the end if it. Best of all, they don't necessarily need a showreel to apply!
You can also shoot scenes yourself! With a basic camera and an improvised stand (I tend to make towers out of small tables) you can perform monologues and scenes however and wherever you want, absolutely free! Then, with a little editing, you can play with the shots, add in memories, thoughts or dreams, and make it look very professional.
Most computers have free editing software built in; I have a MacBook Pro so I use iMovie. Here you can put all your footage together and build your own showreel from scratch! It takes a lot more work, but a long the way you're learning, getting experience and contacts, and saving up to £1000!! Totally worth it.
