Before we turn to supplements found in vitamins it's important to remember vitamins found in foods are better absorbed than ones from pills. Still there is a place for vitamins (always talk to your doctor before trying a new nutritional plan) but knowing which ones NOT to take is as important as knowing which ones you should.
Multivitamins have teeny tiny amounts of the necessary vitamins and minerals. If you've specific health concerns a general low dose multi vitamin won't help.
Thankfully we tend to get enough calcium through our diet, even if you avoid dairy or not. Foods such as almonds, broccoli, and kale are rich in calcium among others, and adding them to your diet will go father in helping than a capsule!
In all actuality iron in a supplement can be hard on your tummy, so it's much better for you to eat foods rich in iron. Spinach, molasses, beans, lean white and red meats are some sources of foods rich in the mineral.
Skip the supplements that contain fillers such as magnesium stearate and cellulose, which gets in the way of absorption as well as often don't contain enough of the nutrients needed.
In my opinion you're always better off organizing your diet so it addresses your health concerns or nutrient deficiencies as vitamins aren't miraculous!
